Weight Loss Basics

Ok, so you've decided you want to lose wight and firm and tone your body. But where do you start?

Here are a few basic steps you can take to get on your way to reaching your goals.

  1. Set some goals. Make these goals measurable goals such as I want to lose 20 pounds, not just I want to lose weight. That way you can see your progress toward your goals, and know when you reach them.
  2. Choose some cardio activities such as walking, running, swimming, tennis, bike riding, dancing etc that you enjoy doing. Organise to do some form of cardio activity for at least 30 min, 3 days a week. Preferably try to do these cardio sessions first thing in the morning when you wake up. By doing exercise before eating in the morning, your body has no choice but to use your body fat for fuel.
  3. You need to do some type of resistance exercises, or weights, to tone and tighten your muscles, and help you burn more calories while you rest. You should do this 3 days a week also. Choose 2 exercise you can do for each large body part. For instance choose 2 exercises that will work the arms...dumbell curl, and tricep extension. The dumbell curls will work the front part of your upper arm, the bicep, and the tricep extensions will work the muscle on the back part of your upper arm ( the bit that often ends up flabby ), the tricep. You can either buy a set of small dumbells for your resistance exercises, or even just use a tin of food, or bottle of water as your weight. Using light weights and doing lots of repetions will tone your muscles, without adding a lot of bulk to them. So for each exercise you perform, try to do 12-15 of them, take a 1 min break, and then do 12-15 more, take another 1 min break, and perform a last set of 12-15 exercises.
  4. If one of your goals is to lose weight then you will have to cut down on the amount of bad foods you are eating. Instead of having 3 chocolate buisuits for a treat, only have 1. Instead of drinking fizzy drink all day, drink water - you'll get used to the taste in no time, and water helps flush out the toxins in your body that can give you cellulite. Don't forget to body brush daily to help combat cellulite. Try to cut out or cut down on all baking type treats, and other foods that are mainly made from sugar. Try to limit foods that have a high GI rating .
  5. If you put all the steps above in to action, then you should be well on the way to reaching your goals. The hardest part of starting something new is actually starting it. So start today, at least take that 1 first step. Even if you start by doing one extra thing every week, it all adds up. Buy a diary, or use an old book, and keep track of what you are doing each day, good and bad. The food you eat, the exercise you do, and how you feel. Once a month measure yourself and see the results.
